Skimmer

In marine aquariums, a skimmer is a central filter component that efficiently removes organic waste from the water before it can decompose and pollute the water. It is often considered the most important filter in a reef aquarium.

Functions and benefits

  • Removal of organic waste: The main purpose of the skimmer is to physically remove proteins, amino acids, excrement and other organic substances (known as Simmat) from the aquarium water. These substances are bound to tiny air bubbles and collected as foam in a separate container (foam pot), thus removing them from the water cycle.
  • Improving water quality and clarity: The early removal of these substances reduces the load on the biological filter systems and inhibits the growth of unwanted algae that feed on nutrients such as phosphate and nitrate. The water remains clearer.
  • Oxygen enrichment: The skimming process effectively enriches the aquarium water with oxygen, promoting optimal gas exchange. This is vital for fish and corals.
  • pH stabilisation:Gas exchange also helps to remove excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the water, which can help to stabilise and potentially increase the pH value.
  • Toxin reduction: It can also remove biological toxins released into the water by certain corals or algae.
