Skimmer

A skimmer (also called a protein skimmer) is a device used in marine aquariums to remove organic waste from the water before it biodegrades and pollutes the water. The skimmer creates fine air bubbles in a reaction chamber. Organic matter such as proteins, fats, and other waste adheres to the surface of these bubbles.

These bubbles rise to the surface and collect in a foam, which then overflows into a collecting container.

Skimmers are primarily used in marine aquariums. These can be private aquariums, but also public aquariums in zoos, museums, research institutes, universities, and professional aquaculture. Skimmers can also be found in freshwater systems. The advantages of a skimmer are:

• Removes organic matter early.

• Reduces the load on biological filters.

• Improves water quality and reduces algae problems.
