UV Devices

A UV clarifier (also known as a UV sterilizer) is a device used in aquariums that irradiates water with UV-C light to kill or render harmless unwanted microorganisms.

The UV clarifier combats floating algae and clears the water by removing green cloudiness. The microbial load is reduced, and bacteria, viruses, and parasites in the water are killed. This protects fish from disease due to a lower bacterial count in the water. Water quality is generally improved, especially in heavily populated aquariums or for sensitive fish. During clarification, the water is passed through a tube containing a UV-C lamp. The UV radiation destroys the DNA of the microorganisms, preventing them from multiplying. The UV clarifier only purifies the water flowing through the device and therefore does not directly purify the entire aquarium. The UV device does not replace a filter or skimmer, but is a complement.

A calcium reactor is a technical device in marine aquariums that is used to provide the aquarium with calcium and carbonates (KH) – both essential substances for the growth of corals and other calcifying organisms.
